UPSC ESE (Engineering Services Examination) , formerly known as Indian Engineering srvices (IES) is one of the standard exams held every year in four subjects of engineering:
Category I-Civil Engineering.
Category II-Mecahnical Engineering.
Category III-Electrical Engineering.
Category IV-Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
The biggest benefit here is that only engineers and students of requisite qualification are allowed appear. So, the situation here is different form other exams that are conducted in the country where all candidates having graduation as a qualification are allowed to take the exam. After cracking the exam and interview, candidates are appointed as gazetted officers under group 'A' or 'B' services/ posts in various organizations under government of India.
This year ESE will be conducted on on 27th May, 2016. ESE is conducted on three consecutive days. On very first day, a single General Ability Test for time duration of 2 hrs is conducted and it carries 200 marks. It has 2 Parts or sections:
Part A : General English
Part B : General Studies
On second day, Objective type test of Engineering subjects is conducted in two shifts (calculators are not allowed in both the shifts):
1. Morning Shift: Objective Paper -I (10:00 am to 12:00 P.M) (Time duration 2 hrs and 200 Marks)
2. Evening Shift: Objective Paper -II (02:00 am to 4:00 P.M) (Time duration 2 hrs and 200 Marks)
On third day, Conventional type test of Engineering subjects are conducted in two shifts (Claculators are allowed in both the shifts):
1. Morning Shift: Conventional Paper -I (10:00 am to 01:00 P.M) (Time duration 3 hrs and 200 Marks)
2. Evening Shift: Conventional Paper -II (02:00 am to 5:00 P.M) (Time duration 3 hrs and 200 Marks)
Remember Conventional papers are evaluated only if the Objective papers are qualified.
So Total marks for written exam = 1000
Qualifying this written test is not an easy task. It requires both understanding and application of concepts. You must start preparing at least an year before you take the exam. After serious preparation and deep understanding of concepts, you will find yourself in a position to crack the exam. Here, in this post, we are sharing some of the useful tips that will help you in a year long preparation and make the task little easy for you.
First of all, there are few things or doubts about ESE that you should clear at the first stage before
you start preparing for the exam:
1. There is no bar on number of times a candidate can attempt the exam. One can attempt it as many times as possible till he/she does not cross the upper age limit specified by UPSC, Unlike Civil services exam where the number of attempts are restricted, there is no limit on number of attempts in ESE. So, start preparing and taking exam as early as possible
2. The minimum condition for Engineers is that they should have passed the bachelor degree from the College or University specified by UPSC. But for appearing in the exam you do not require to opt for the same subject in ESE paper in which passed your engineering. For example, a mechanical engineering student can opt to take ESE exam in Civil engineering Exam and vice-versa. The situation here is similar to Civil services examination where you require bachelor degree (or graduation as a qualification) and you can opt to take the exam in other subjects. So, if you are not satisfied with your performance or preparation at college/ University level exam, you can opt for other subjects of engineering examination for ESE.
You need to scoire 60% of the exam to make a good position in ESE.
There are certain tips that most of the candididates have found useful and you will find it helpful before you appear in the exam:
1. Revise your engineering concepts studied at college/university level. Make notes of it.
2. Do take help of books you studied in your engineering degree. It can be of great help in starting and revising the concepts. Ask your teachers/ seniors about the books that can be of help in preparation in Engineering. If you do not find help from them, search on internet. Search online for various material and books. Internet is loaded with sites that are suggesting list of good quality books.
3. Those who are studying in various coaching institutes in India can take help from teachers but those who do not have specialized faculties can take help of notes published by these teachers. Generally, the notes prepared from these institutes are sold in shops that lie close to these institutes. So, you can buy these notes. Sometimes, books are also published by the teachers of these institutes which can be of great help. Another option is ordering the study material directly from these institutes. If your friend/s study in top ranked colleges of India, you can take help of them or the faculty of the institute. The material or books from coaching institutes can be of great help for General ability paper also.
4. Do solve previous year papers. If you have made a serious preparation throughout the year, you would be familiar to the importance of questions asked in previous exams. You might have noticed that most of the times questions in previous years ESE exams appear directly in objective and conventional papers of next year where options are similar to those asked in previous papers. Same applies to conventional papers also. So if you have solved the papers you can directly mark the options or solve easily without much mental effort. This will save time also
5. Analyze the various sections and the trend of the topics and the type of questions asked in last five years
6. What to do if you get stuck on a particular question? If you do not find help from the sources available to you, put the question online on various forums, websites, social media on ESE or GATE or request a reply from the teachers/ Professors teaching in top institutes/ colleges of India.
7. Make a habit of writing Assumptions in the beginning and inferences at the end of solution in conventional solutions. Draw diagrams with pencil wherever necessary
8. Write neatly and clean. Even if you are drawing diagrams on scale, make sure its clean and free of stray marks. .
9. During the conventional paper, draw a horizontal line with black or blue pen (whichever you are using) at the end of solution of each question.
10. Last but not the least, have a good nature during your preparation. Respect and thanks your parents, teacher, etc everyone who helped you achieving your goals. Work hard. Have nutritious diet and positive attitude. Avoid junk food especially during exam days. Take proper sleep. Have faith in God and thank him for everything He has gifted you.
Do not worry even if you do not qualify the exam. There might be something better waiting for you
