Pakistanis are ashamed at the way Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was treated in Saudi Arabia during his recent visit to the Kingdom, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has said.
“I have been receiving a lot of messages from Pakistanis from across the world… they are embarrassed at how Pakistan’s prime minister was treated during Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia,” the PTI chairman told reporters in Islamabad on Monday.
Nawaz Sharif left for Saudi Arabia on Sunday on a two-day visit to attend the US-Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh. He attended the moot on the invitation of Saudi King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.
While Pakistani Foreign Office officials had earlier confirmed to The Express Tribune that efforts were underway to arrange a maiden bilateral meeting between Donald Trump and Nawaz at the sidelines of the summit; the meeting could not materialise.
The PM was also not given a chance to address the summit.
The PTI chief said he expected the premier to release a statement over the the US president’s “comments against Muslims”.
“Trump termed Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorists because they are against Israel. He tried to isolate Iran and did not consider mentioning Palestinians and their struggle,” Imran said.
The PTI leader said there was unrest among Muslim nations and we should try to resolve the issues instead of fanning more rifts.
“We should not sow more rifts among Muslims. We should have learnt not to become a party to these conflicts after 9/11,” he added.
